What is a good Dragon alternative for Mac?

Quick answer: As of November 7, 2026, Dragon for Mac is no longer sold. Nuance announced in October 2018 that it was discontinuing Dragon Professional Individual for Mac. Dictop is a Mac dictation app you can try instead. It types your speech into the app you are using, can transcribe on your Mac with a downloaded model, and lets you rebuild your Dragon vocabulary as replacement rules, including regular expressions. Dictop costs US $6.99 once (US App Store), with a 30-day free trial, and the same purchase covers iPhone and iPad. Dictop is for writing, not voice commands; for those, there is our separate Mac app DopDock. Dictop has no Windows app.

If you used Dragon on a Mac, you know what you want: speak, and see clean text appear where you are working. This page explains what happened to Dragon for Mac and how to get a similar daily workflow in Dictop.

Is Dragon for Mac still available?

No. Nuance said it had made the difficult decision to discontinue the Dragon Professional Individual for Mac line-up in October 2018. According to The Register, which quoted Nuance, the software keeps working but gets no future updates or support. Phone support covered 90 days from activation in North America and 180 days elsewhere. TidBITS reported the same support terms and noted in 2019 that Nuance kept developing the Windows versions.

Dragon's Windows products are a separate matter. If you need them, check their current status with Microsoft, which now owns Nuance.

An old copy of Dragon for Mac may still run on your Mac. That is not a safe long-term plan, because the app gets no updates for new versions of macOS.

How do I move from Dragon to Dictop?

You can test Dictop with your real work while your old setup still exists.

  1. Install Dictop on your Mac. The 30-day free trial covers on-device use, and you are not charged automatically when it ends.
  2. Download an on-device speech model and pick your language. Read what works offline if you want to dictate without internet.
  3. Dictate into the app you normally write in, such as Mail, Pages, Word or your browser. Dictop inserts the text where your cursor is. See dictating into Mac apps.
  4. Rebuild your custom vocabulary as replacement rules. Write down the words your recognizer gets wrong, then add one rule for each. See custom words and replacements.
  5. Turn on spoken punctuation. Dictop has a ready-made Punctuation and Symbols rule set that turns phrases such as "new paragraph", "new line", "question mark" and "comma" into the matching characters. Add it from Settings → Replacements, then edit any rule you want to change.
  6. Choose how you record. Toggle recording with a shortcut instead of holding a key, or try continuous mode for hands-free writing. See dictating without holding a key.
  7. Add optional AI cleanup only if you want it. You can also review text before it is pasted.

Which Dragon habits carry over?

If you used Dragon to... In Dictop on Mac
Dictate into other apps Insert text by paste, copy or simulated typing (US English keyboard layout required for typing)
Teach it your words Replacement rules, exact or regular expressions with capture groups such as $1
Say punctuation aloud The ready-made Punctuation and Symbols set, which you can edit
Keep talking without pressing keys Continuous mode inserts text after each pause you set
Transcribe recordings Drag and drop a file, or use the Finder Services action. See transcribing audio and video files

Replacement rules change the recognized text. They do not train the speech model, so a rule fixes a repeated mistake but cannot teach the model a word it has never heard. The rule features above are documented for the Mac app. Apple Intelligence refinement needs macOS 26+ on eligible hardware.

What does Dictop cost, and does it work on iPhone and iPad?

Dictop costs US $6.99 once for lifetime on-device use (US App Store, checked November 7, 2026). Regional prices vary and are shown in the app. Supported Apple Intelligence refinement is included. Cloud models are optional, and you pay for them with separate prepaid hours that do not expire. See dictation without a subscription and the pricing overview.

One lifetime purchase covers Dictop on Mac, iPhone and iPad. On another device, sign in with the same Apple Account and choose Restore previous purchases. On iPhone and iPad, Dictop works through its own keyboard. See the iPhone dictation keyboard and the iOS page.

What are the limits of Dictop?

  • Dictop does not control your Mac by voice. It has no spoken commands to open apps or run macros, which Dragon is known for. For voice commands, use DopDock, our Mac automation app. It runs workflows by voice or from a Dock-like bar, such as keyboard shortcuts, text actions, AppleScript and your Apple Shortcuts.
  • Dictop has no medical or legal specialist vocabularies. You can add your own terms as rules.
  • Dictop has no Windows or Android app.
  • Local speech models work best on Apple Silicon Macs. On Intel Macs, use cloud transcription.
  • Accuracy depends on the model, your voice, your microphone and your language. We have not run a benchmark, so we do not compare Dictop with Dragon on accuracy or speed.
  • When you pick a cloud model, your audio goes to that service for transcription. Check the privacy policy for details.

If you only need free basic dictation, Apple's built-in Dictation may be enough. See Dictop or Apple Dictation.

Which should I try first?

Try Dictop if you dictate on a Mac, want to pay once, and want to keep your vocabulary in rules you control. The trial is free, so you can compare it with your own voice and apps. If you rely on voice commands, add DopDock for those tasks and use Dictop for writing.
