Is Dictop a good MacWhisper alternative?

Quick answer: Yes, if your main job is dictating into the apps you already use, on a Mac, iPhone or iPad. Dictop costs US $6.99 once for lifetime on-device use, and one purchase covers all three devices. MacWhisper is built mainly for transcribing audio and video files, recording meetings and working with transcripts. Its system-wide dictation is one feature, and only in the direct-download version. Dictop also has regular expression rules and a continuous mode for hands-free writing on the Mac.

Dictop vs MacWhisper is mostly a question of the main job. Dictop is a dictation app, with file transcription on the Mac as an extra. MacWhisper is a transcription app, with dictation as an extra. Both can transcribe on your Mac with local models.

How can I try Dictop if I use MacWhisper today?

You can test Dictop next to MacWhisper, without cancelling anything.

  1. Install Dictop on your Mac or iPhone and iPad. The 30-day free trial covers on-device use, and you are not charged automatically when it ends.
  2. Download an on-device speech model and dictate into the apps you write in. Include names, jargon and numbers from your own work.
  3. Add your most frequent corrections as replacement rules. See custom words and replacements for how.
  4. Decide if you want AI cleanup. It is optional, and you can review text before it is pasted.
  5. Compare the results with your current setup, then decide.

What does MacWhisper do that Dictop does not?

MacWhisper is the stronger fit for work centered on recordings. Its site lists:

  • Transcribing files in batches, YouTube and podcast links, and app audio.
  • Automatic speaker recognition and a built-in transcript editor.
  • Subtitle export and many more export formats.
  • Automatic recording of meetings in Zoom, Teams and other call apps.
  • Watched folders and a command-line tool.

Dictop does not have these. Its file transcription on the Mac is simpler. See formats and exports for what it covers.

How much does Dictop cost, and does one purchase cover all my devices?

Dictop costs US $6.99 once for lifetime on-device use (US App Store). Regional prices vary and are shown in the app. Supported Apple Intelligence refinement is included. MacWhisper's current prices are on its site.

Cloud models are optional. You buy prepaid credits as hours of dictation, and they never expire. In the US App Store, one hour of Cloud Transcription + AI costs $1.49. Cloud credits are a separate purchase from lifetime access. See dictation without a subscription for the full price list.

One lifetime purchase covers Dictop on Mac, iPhone and iPad. On another device, sign in with the same Apple Account and choose Restore previous purchases. Cloud credit balances belong to your Dictop account, so sign in to the same account on each device.

MacWhisper sells its Mac license and its App Store apps separately. Its documentation says the license key works only with the direct-download version, and the App Store apps use in-app purchases.

What are the limits of Dictop?

  • Dictop has no Windows or Android app.
  • Dictop has no team administration, such as shared team dictionaries or central billing.
  • Many controls are Mac-only, including regular expression rules, Services actions, continuous mode and the Dock menu.
  • On iPhone and iPad, the keyboard needs Full Access, microphone permission for Dictop and a recording session you start in the app. Some apps and secure fields do not allow custom keyboards.
  • Local speech models work best on Apple Silicon Macs. On Intel Macs, use cloud transcription.
  • Accuracy depends on the model, your voice and your language. We have not run a benchmark, so we do not rank either app for accuracy or speed.
  • When you pick a cloud model, your audio goes to that service for transcription. Check the privacy policy for details.

Which should I try first?

Try Dictop if you mostly dictate into other apps, work across Mac, iPhone and iPad, want to pay once, or want rules you can define precisely. The trial is free, so you can compare with your own voice and apps. If you also transcribe recordings, check Dictop's formats and exports to see whether its simpler file transcription covers your files.
