Is Dictop a good VoiceInk alternative?

Quick answer: Yes, if you want one low-cost purchase that covers your Mac, iPhone and iPad. Dictop costs US $6.99 once for lifetime on-device use, with a 30-day free trial. VoiceInk is a Mac app with one-time prices of $25 for one Mac, $39 for two and $49 for three. It also has an iPhone and iPad companion app. Dictop adds regular expression rules, which VoiceInk's documentation does not describe. It also has a continuous mode on the Mac that inserts text after each pause, and a diff of the Original, Replaced and AI versions.

Dictop vs VoiceInk is a close comparison. Both apps dictate into the app you are using, both can transcribe on your device, and both are paid once instead of monthly. They differ in price, device coverage and correction rules.

How can I try Dictop if I use VoiceInk today?

You can test Dictop next to VoiceInk, without removing anything.

  1. Install Dictop on your Mac or iPhone and iPad. The 30-day free trial covers on-device use, and you are not charged automatically when it ends.
  2. Download an on-device speech model and dictate the way you normally do. Include names, jargon and numbers from your own work.
  3. Add your most frequent corrections as replacement rules. See custom words and replacements for how.
  4. Decide if you want AI cleanup. It is optional, and you can review text before it is pasted.
  5. Compare the results with your current setup, then decide.

How much does Dictop cost, and does one purchase cover all my devices?

Dictop costs US $6.99 once for lifetime on-device use (US App Store). Regional prices vary and are shown in the app. Supported Apple Intelligence refinement is included. VoiceInk's plans are on its pricing page.

Cloud models are optional. You buy prepaid credits as hours of dictation, and they never expire. In the US App Store, one hour of Cloud Transcription + AI costs $1.49. Cloud credits are a separate purchase from lifetime access. See dictation without a subscription for the full price list.

One lifetime purchase covers Dictop on Mac, iPhone and iPad. On another device, sign in with the same Apple Account and choose Restore previous purchases. Cloud credit balances belong to your Dictop account, so sign in to the same account on each device.

VoiceInk's multi-device license covers Macs, not iPhones, according to its license documentation.

What are the limits of Dictop?

  • Dictop has no Windows or Android app.
  • Dictop has no team administration, such as shared team dictionaries or central billing.
  • Many controls are Mac-only, including regular expression rules, Services actions, continuous mode and the Dock menu.
  • On iPhone and iPad, the keyboard needs Full Access, microphone permission for Dictop and a recording session you start in the app. Some apps and secure fields do not allow custom keyboards.
  • Local speech models work best on Apple Silicon Macs. On Intel Macs, use cloud transcription.
  • Accuracy depends on the model, your voice and your language. We have not run a benchmark, so we do not rank either app for accuracy or speed.
  • When you pick a cloud model, your audio goes to that service for transcription. Check the privacy policy for details.

Which should I try first?

Try Dictop if you dictate on more than one Apple device, want to pay once for all of them, or want rules you can define precisely. The trial is free, so you can compare with your own voice and apps.
