Is Dictop a good Superwhisper alternative?

Quick answer: Yes, if you use Apple devices. Dictop vs Superwhisper starts with price. Dictop costs US $6.99 once for lifetime on-device dictation, and there is a 30-day free trial with no automatic charge. Superwhisper Pro costs $8.49 a month, $84.99 a year or $249.99 for lifetime. Dictop also runs on iPad, which Superwhisper's own documentation says it does not, and adds regex correction rules and review-before-paste on Mac. Prices are from the US App Store and Superwhisper's website. Regional prices vary.

Both apps turn speech into text in any app, and both can work offline. The differences are in cost, devices and how much control you get over the text before it lands. This page compares what each company documents. It does not rank speed or accuracy, because there is no shared benchmark.

Dictop vs Superwhisper: what does each cost?

Dictop is a one-time purchase for on-device use. Optional cloud time is prepaid and never expires. Superwhisper has a free local tier and sells Pro as a subscription or a lifetime license.

Dictop Superwhisper
Free option 30-day trial of on-device dictation. No automatic charge when it ends. Free plan with local models and usage limits. New users get 3,000 words of Pro.
Monthly or yearly None. Pro is $8.49 a month or $84.99 a year.
Lifetime US $6.99 once, including supported Apple Intelligence refinement. Pro lifetime is $249.99 once.
Cloud models Optional prepaid credits that never expire. For example, 1 hour of Cloud Transcription + AI is US $1.49. Included in Pro.
Apple Intelligence refinement Included in the lifetime purchase on supported devices. Offline AI formatting uses its local S1-mini model in the Message or Mail mode.

Dictop prices are from the US App Store listing. Superwhisper prices are from its plans page. Prices in your own storefront may differ. See Dictop's full pricing for every cloud pack.

At these prices, Dictop's lifetime purchase costs less than one month of Superwhisper Pro. Cloud credits are only needed if you choose a cloud model. Local models need no credits.

Dictop vs Superwhisper: which devices work?

Dictop runs on Mac, iPhone and iPad. Superwhisper's iOS page says it supports iPhone only and that iPad is not supported. If you write on a Mac and an iPad, that settles a lot.

One lifetime purchase covers Mac, iPhone and iPad. Sign in with the same Apple Account on each device and choose Restore previous purchases. Cloud credit balances belong to your Dictop account, so sign in to the same account to use them on every device.

On iPhone and iPad, Dictop works as a keyboard. You start a session in the app first, then dictate in supported fields in other apps. Keyboard Full Access and microphone permission for Dictop must be on. See the iPhone and iPad page for the details.

What can Dictop do differently on Mac?

These rows cover features where Dictop's documentation is specific. "Not documented" means Superwhisper's official documentation does not describe an equivalent. It does not prove the feature is absent.

Pause a recording Pause and resume from the menu bar or a shortcut. A dictation pause is not documented.
Reuse a recent passage The Dock menu lists your five most recent notes. Insert one at the cursor. Not documented.
Transcribe files Drag and drop, or a Finder Services action. Results go to History. Pro feature with a Finder Open With route.

Regex needs care. A broad pattern can change text you meant to keep, so test it on a few sentences first. Our guide to custom words and replacements shows how.

How do I compare them fairly?

Use your own voice and your own apps. A short test beats any feature list.

  1. Install Dictop and start the 30-day trial. Pick a local model and dictate one real email or note.
  2. Dictate the same text in the app you use today.
  3. Add three corrections you need every week, such as a product name and a formatting pattern.
  4. Count how many edits are left in each result. Note which one needed fewer steps.
  5. If you use an iPad, try Dictop there too.

Recognition quality depends on the model, your accent and your vocabulary. Dictop lets you switch models and try cloud options if a local one misses your terms.

Where does Dictop fit best?

Dictop fits best when you want a low one-time cost, Apple devices including iPad, and control over how a recording becomes text. The price point, regex rules and review step matter most on Mac. The iPad support matters most if a tablet is part of your day.

It also suits you if you want to try before paying. The trial runs for 30 days and does not charge you automatically. Learn more on the Mac page and the pricing section.

What are Dictop's limits?

  • Dictop has no Windows or Android apps. If you need dictation on those systems, Dictop will not cover them.
  • Continuous mode, review before pasting and Dock reuse are Mac features. The iPhone and iPad keyboard works in supported fields only, and some apps and secure fields block custom keyboards.
  • Simulated typing needs a US English keyboard layout. Paste and Copy do not.
  • Apple Intelligence refinement needs macOS or iPadOS/iOS 26, supported hardware and a ready model.
  • Cloud models use prepaid credits. Local models do not.
  • Mac insertion needs Accessibility permission. Screen context needs Screen Recording permission.
  • No benchmark shows that either app recognizes speech better. Test with your own voice.
