Should I choose Whisper or Parakeet for Mac dictation?

Quick answer — November 1, 2026: Choose by language support and results on your Mac. Dictop offers several Whisper sizes plus Parakeet v2 and v3. Parakeet v2 is English-only; v3 has multilingual support. Whisper options offer different resource demands. Check the models available in your installed app, then compare your own recordings.

The model name is only a starting point. Your accent, microphone, vocabulary and tolerance for waiting all affect which option is useful. A comparison on someone else's hardware cannot settle the choice for your writing.

Start with language compatibility

Dictop includes Whisper Tiny and offers Whisper Base, Small, Medium, Large v2, Large v3 and Large v3 Turbo as downloads. You can also choose Parakeet v2 or Parakeet v3.

Parakeet v2 is English-only, while v3 is multilingual. Language support differs between these variants and Whisper. Use the selected model’s language picker to see your available languages.

Model availability can vary by Mac and app version, so check which options are available on your device.

Compare the work each model leaves you

Use two or three short recordings rather than one convenient demo sentence. Include a normal paragraph, a passage with proper nouns and something you would dictate in a hurry.

For each model, write down:

  • How long you wait after stopping the recording.
  • Which words you have to correct.
  • Whether numbers and names survive accurately.
  • Whether the Mac still feels responsive while you work.

Leave AI cleanup off while comparing. Otherwise an AI editor may hide or introduce differences that do not come from the speech recognizer itself.

What does model size change?

Larger downloads require more storage, and local inference uses your Mac's resources. Dictop shows model information to help you assess that tradeoff. Size alone does not prove that a model will be the best choice for your voice.

If a smaller option already produces usable drafts with little correction, a larger download may add little value for that task. If it repeatedly misses important wording, try another compatible option and compare the full writing time.

Fix consistent errors separately

Once you find a promising model, add replacement rules for predictable misrecognitions such as a company name. That handles a different problem from choosing the recognizer: the model interprets speech, while a replacement transforms text it has already produced.

Dictop lets you make this choice inside one app, with the same insertion and editing workflow around it. Try Dictop for Mac and consult model and language guidance for setup.
