Should I use on-device or cloud dictation?
Quick answer — November 1, 2026: Start with on-device dictation if offline use and local audio processing matter most. Try a cloud model if it gives better results for your voice or reduces local processing demands. Dictop offers both. Compare them using the same passage, including correction time, rather than assuming cloud or local is always better.
Where speech recognition runs and how well a model understands you are separate considerations. A local model that suits your language may work better for you than a cloud model that struggles with your terminology, or vice versa.
What changes between the two?
| Consideration | On-device speech | Cloud speech |
|---|---|---|
| Internet | Can transcribe offline once ready | Requires a connection |
| Audio processing | Runs on your device | Audio is sent for the selected request |
| Local resources | Model storage and local computation | Remote inference, with local recording and upload work |
| Results | Depend on the model, audio and device | Depend on the provider, model, audio and connection |
| Dictop payment | One-time on-device purchase after trial | Separately purchased credits |
Neither column guarantees a faster or more accurate result for your specific task.
Which cloud choices are available on my device?
Open Dictop's Transcription settings on the device you plan to use to see your available models. Check that a model supports your language, and consider its connection requirements and credit use before choosing it.
Choices can vary by platform and release. A provider may offer several speech models, so each model in the list does not necessarily represent a different provider.
Run a comparison that resembles real writing
Record a passage containing ordinary sentences, a name you use often, a date and some specialist vocabulary. Try available local and cloud choices in Dictop. Keep the microphone and recording conditions as consistent as possible.
Look for missing words, incorrect names, punctuation and unwanted changes. Also time the wait until you can use the text, including editing. A model that finishes sooner but needs several manual corrections may slow the overall task.
For your first comparison, leave AI refinement off so you can judge speech recognition separately from any editing afterward.
Keep recognition and refinement separate in your decision
Dictop can optionally refine transcripts after recognition and replacement rules. Apple Intelligence is an on-device option where supported. Cloud refinement uses credits, and the app shows which model combinations are supported. Not every speech model can be paired with every rewrite model.
If your goal is a fully local content-processing workflow, check the refinement setting as well as the speech setting. If your goal is the most usable text, compare the complete supported combination after you have chosen a promising speech model.
A practical starting point
Try a suitable local model first if it supports your language and runs comfortably on your device. Keep a cloud option in mind for recordings where your own comparison shows a benefit. Dictop's cloud credits do not expire, so occasional cloud use does not require a monthly usage commitment.
